NRL star tests positive to cocaine

EXCLUSIVE by James Hooper

NORTH Queensland Cowboys prop Mitchell Sargent has been sacked from the NRL club after returning a positive test to cocaine.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal Sargent returned a positive in-house test to the recreational drug earlier this month. The Cowboys have torn up Sargent’s contract and his future in the NRL remains unclear. The Country Origin prop’s future remains unclear with the NRL expected to impose the mandatory two-year ban on Sargent. The NRL has been informed of the positive drug test and a spokesman said the Cowboys would issue a press release later today. Sargent is the first NRL player since’s Manly’s Andrew Walker in 2004 to test positive to a recreational drug. The positive drug test is the latest drama for the Cowboys who have slipped from grand finalists last year to missing the cut for the top eight in 2006.

Who really cares about sportsmen using recreational drugs. If they want to cut their careers and possibly their lives short by wrecking thier bodies with dangerous drugs, why can't they. as long as they're not performance enhancing

I can tell you right now some of the biggest names in the game have used recreational drugs at one time or another

Sargent is a very good player, it is stupid how he had to do this. Hopefully he learns from it and signs with another club next year - hate to see him get a ban.

i can't believe the cows dobbed him in if it was just an inhouse test. Lockyer's been found to have cocaine in his system at at least 2 in house bronco's tests that i know of.

Yep, unless there was a previous test, I think going straight for "sacked, 2 year ban", basically kicking them out of their career, for an "in-house" test is pretty harsh.

Hey, if you ever have Tomato on a chicken sandwich or bread roll, do you find (I think its with hot and cold chicken) that the tomato sauce goes strange and sorta "glugs" the bread up?

Im not sure havent had a chicken sandiwch in ages. Anyone else had "gluggy" bread experiences? My theory is that the bread must soak up the sauce like a sponge and go weird.

Well, I'm just about to eat chicken roll (roast chicken) and I'll get back to you.

Okay, I guess it's bread, not breadroll, because there was no gluggy tomato.

You contribute nothing to these forums. Sargent is a great player who is underated my most. It is a shame that his carrer is virtually over now. he has one thing over you tho.

He has played first grade.

To be perfectly honest, I like it when Illmatic gets in moods like this.

The only time we regularly see players get bagged is by biased idiots who try to compare them to their own players - or even worse, Queensland v NSW debates.

Illmatic provides honest and unbiased criticism of players that are, frankly, average first graders at best. It's refreshing from the biased tripe that we hear all the time and the ass-kissing of average players that also goes on quite a bit as well.

Sometimes players like Sargent that play a lot of first grade games for little recognition are under-rated, but most times they are just plain rubbish and don't deserve said recognition. Sargent was a "plodder" - he was very, very, very consistant, but he was consistantly an average first grader. He never had a shocker of a match but he was rarely in the top 10 players of a match either.

Just so everyone knows, because it was in house there is no 2 yr banning or anything like that. I'd say he'd look at super league.

He got what he deserved. You are not allowed to take drugs as an NRL player, especially cocaine. This should send out a clear message to all other NRL players of what the consequences are of taking drugs.

Your not allowed to take them as a member of the public either, I'm very impressed with this crackdown despite being a cowboys supporter, I am very happy they are ironing out bad influences in the Rugby League community.

You can never iron out the bad influences in the Rugby League Community. What you should be able to control is the stories in which the media choose to highlight just to sell papers. I would have thought that the tense ceasefire in Lebanon and Israel is more important than Mitchell Sargent failing an in-house drug test  However despite his admission, he won't be banned, because it was not a sanctioned or tested by the governing body therefore he is privy unto different rules. He will probably be picked up by some other NRL club next year. Maybe the Broncos

it is but after a while that gets 'boring' to readers so a drug story from a representative NRL player is a big story.
